morning drive

This morning I loaded up my “gear” and headed out to survey some of my favourite backroads.  I drove down to the Melbourne area and points south.

I noticed small flocks of Horned Larks along the roads here and there.  Hawks were quite numerous, especially around Hyndman and Switzer Roads, both Red-tails and Rough-legs, with Rough-legs outnumbering the Red-tails.  At one point, I got out and walked down an abandoned railway track to get a closer look at 3 Bald Eagles (two adult and one youngin). A Northern Shrike stood out at the top of a small bush, as they often do, on Springfield Road, just north of Hyndman.  American Crows, Blue Jays, Northern Cardinals and Red-bellied Woodpeckers were seen in several locations.  I also saw two Song Sparrows foraging in the weeds along a fence-line that runs along Hyndman, east of Springfield Road.

As I was returning home, I turned down Walker’s Road and just east of Thames Road, a beautiful adult Bald Eagle flew across the road right over my van.

It was especially enjoyable today as I haven’t found the time to get out recently.

Wish I knew my hawks better. I just assume the big guys are red tails! We are seeing flocks of snow buntings in the fields here as well.

You are so lucky to have enjoyed that outing… wish I could have gone with you. Sometimes life gets in the way of living… or something like that. LOL
Between exercise class, craft group and grandchildren I’m hard pressed to find time to go birding. I was fortunate to see about 10 snow buntings in the field on our road today. Anyway, keep enjoying! Hope to get out with you soon!
