Times, they are a changin’……….

It is beginning to feel like fall again.  The days are getting shorter and the nights cooler.  There is just something about the air that says fall is coming.  This morning as I walked my dog, a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK flew overhead and landed in a tree nearby.  After standing there and watching it for a couple of minutes, it was off and soared off to the southwest.  I imagine it was and early migrant.  The birds are heading south again.  I’ll have to look at my calendar and figure out when would be a good time to schedule a trip to Hawk Cliff.  I encourage all people interested in birds and birding to visit Hawk Cliff this fall.  They have volunteer “counters” that keep track of all the hawks that pass by.  The counters are very friendly and will answer any questions you might have.  Bring a lawn chair and a sack lunch.  Binoculars and cameras.  It is a great place to spend a beautiful September day.  Mornings are usually best for viewing.  Weekends can get pretty crowded.  Just pick a day and go.  You will surely enjoy it.

And a reminder, too, that now is the time to get out your bird feeders.  Migrating birds can get hungry, you know.  So please put out something for them to eat along the way.  And have fun watching the birds coming to your yard.

Yes, things are changing once again. Our barn swallows left almost two weeks ago and our barn is a sad and empty place without their familiar chatter. Our colony had been busting at the seams and raised a bumper crop of fledglings this year The meadow and forest are largely silent too. Sigh.
