March Trip

I always like to head up to the Grand Bend area in mid-March to view the huge number of Tundra Swans that use the area around Greenway Road as a stop-over during their migration.  However, this year the area is quite dry.  And the swans prefer to have a “wet” area in which to rest, feed and prepare for the next leg of their journey north.  So as a result, there have not been many swans reported in near Greenway Road.  Small flocks have been seen flying over in the general area and out over Lake Huron.  So some are around and more probably will come.

I am going to “give it shot” and plan for a trip to that area on the 17th of March.  That is a Saturday.  We will meet in the parking lot of the Senior’s Centre in Strathroy at 9 AM.  It will take about an hour (maybe a little less) to reach Greenway.  We can look for swans and any other waterfowl that might be around.  In addition, we can drive up around Port Franks and watch for any other birds that happen to come our way.  When we made this trip last year, we stopped at a restaurant in Grand Bend for lunch before heading home in the afternoon and that seemed to work well with everyone.

It would be nice to get an idea of how many are considering participation on this trip.  Please email me at theskins@rogers.com if you want to come along.

Have fun and good birding.

Last weekend my husband saw 2 robins in our backyard here in strathroy. Amazing–we have woodpeckers back after not seeing them for awhile.
walked in conservation area this morning–lots of bird sounds but not many visible–at least to me.
Spring is on its way and very welcome indeed.
